What started as a pipe dream slowly evolved into a real plan—one that took over a year to prepare. After months of saving, arranging care for our cat, and securing a tenant for our home, we finally did it. Kat, the kids, and I packed up our lives into seven travel packs and set off on our year-long (or longer) journey. We left on February 26th, 2025, with the aim of exploring Europe and the UK, with a few stops along the way—including Singapore and Malaysia.
Our first destination was Singapore. Unfortunately, the excitement of arrival was short-lived as we all came down with a bug, likely picked up during the flight. Not the ideal way to kick off our adventure, and it meant postponing our trip into Malaysia by a day. It was rough, but we made the best of it.
Let’s just say our departure from Singapore was less than graceful. I’m fairly certain it was the first time anyone had witnessed a mother and son throwing up into a Universal Studios bag in the middle of a subway station. Travel memories, right?
Despite the rocky start, Singapore had its highlights. The fresh tropical fruit was a welcome treat, and while the pod accommodation was a bit of a squeeze, it added to the adventure. The real standout, though, was Gardens by the Bay—breathtaking during the day, and truly magical when lit up at night. It reminded us why we’re doing this: to share these unforgettable moments as a family.
